At the beginning of the 2000s, I couldn’t afford a studio, and the only place where I could experiment was the street. Additionally, I didn’t have much money, so materials like paint and canvases were sourced directly from the street or from second-hand markets.

The theme of this work revolves around the continuous cycle of the metaphor of life and death. I inherited these woodcut prints by Joseph Nigg; I didn’t know what to do with them, but the images captivated me. I am fascinated by old illustrations the technique combined with the dirt of time and the degraded materials has always intrigued me. Not knowing what to do, one day I took some graphite and drew the outline of a skull. Shortly after, I took white paint and began to cover them in negative, so that the flowers became the texture of the skull. Many of my works on paper revisit the theme of death; I believe it is, quite simply, always relevant.

When I created the first series of this work in 2021, the shape of the skull reminded me of Snow White’s apple. Becoming aware of this, I began to develop the skull design to align more closely with this association. The idea of creating a popular interpretation with Disney amused me; many of my works, particularly those that evoke a graphic or illustrative language, have a pop symbolic association. The apple is a symbol that represents jealousy, deception, and sexuality—the forbidden fruit—similar to the apple of Adam and Eve, which signifies discovery and knowledge. It evokes the dual nature of man and the divide between good and evil, themes that are present in the works of Brandalism and the dual conception of Post-Humanism.
